When To Schedule Baby Photos

One of the most common questions I get from parents is when are the best ages to schedule photo sessions for their baby. While every child's progression is unique, there are key stages that lend themselves beautifully to simple, artful portraits.

Here are my top recommended ages and why they work so well for my minimalist style.

Newborn

There's nothing quite like delicate newborn portraits. At just a few days or weeks old, babies wonderfully curl up, often sleeping peacefully - perfect for documenting their newness. Their tiny features beg to be spotlighted in close-up, tightly cropped shots. Newborn sessions capture the essence of their tiny beginnings.

6-9 Months “sitter sessions”

This age range is ideal for showcasing babies' blossoming personalities as they start actively engaging with their environment. Without being mobile but able to sit well, this is the best time to see all the gummy smiles and expressions before the stranger-danger really sets in. The resulting images exude their uniqueness.

11-12 Months

A few weeks before their first birthday is a golden age for 1 year portraits. They’re on the move, they are a bit more curious about what is going on and able to take a tiny bit of direction. Yet they still have that iconic baby look that tugs heartstrings. At this age, they intently explore toys and objects - I love incorporating is their favorite lovey at this memorable transition to toddlerhood.

Every age has its perks when it comes to capturing your baby. But these sweet spots balance baby-like qualities with their blossoming awareness - yielding those memorable heirloom portraits. What's been your favorite age to photograph baby? Let me know in the comments!
